Catch & Release Best Practice & Hot Weather Fishing Tips

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, In : Fishing

Catch & Release Best Practice:

Its been a dry season so far and a lot of our rivers are very very low. Add to the fact that temperatures are in the upper 20's with bright sunshine means that it's great for sunbathing and watching the World Cup with a cool one in the shade but not great for us fly fishers or for the trout & grayling either.
I thought it might be useful to share some handy Catch & Release advice just to remind ourselves and make sure we are all doing our best to look after our wo...

The Durham Fly Fishing Company 2018 Early Season Round Up

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Monday, May 21, 2018, In : News

Eventually things have started to warm up after what all I can say has been a cold, slow, and patchy spring. The hatches have been the best I have seen for a good few years but trout seem to have been reluctant to rise despite the bounty on the surface. Fish have been in great fettle which has meant fishing earlier in the day and early evening to match their active [periods. This last bit of warm weather has really got the hatches in full swing with Hawthorns, Black Gnats, Iron Blues, Yellow ...

Thanks to Jon from Outdoor Empire for allowing me to share the following link.

Not that we need another reason to go fishing as we already have thousands however there is an important one that few anglers ever consider:  FlyFishing – is great for your health.

Anytime you spend time outdoors in the natural world, you’ll enjoy the restorative and stress-relieving benefits nature provides, but fishing provides a number of other benefits that you won’t get by just going for a picnic or bird...

A belter of a fly..."Stuie's Perfect Olive" a bit on fly design ...and the trouts window

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, In : Flies and Tackle
As you all know "The Lifter" is a favorite of mine and many clients go to dry pattern for searching the water and covering rising fish. However there are many times when the fish get locked onto small uprights.
A key trigger is often the wing appearing in the trouts window ( Check out Vince Marinaro  "The Ring of the Rise" which has been a major influence on my dry fly fishing )

So here we have it.. ..my  "Perfect Olive" or "Stuie's Olive"   even though my good pal Charles Jardine did credit it...

Rexfly Casting System - Review by Phil P

I thought it would be useful to share a recent independent review received from Phil P of the Rexfly Casting System.

Well Stu, I managed to get out today with the Rexfly today on Elan Valley to chase some wild browns on the Claerwen Dam in Wales.

Well to be fair, this new bit of kit came into its own when I got used to it which did not take that long for me. Casting, a fly rod without a reel attached, may sound weird, but what a joy it is.

For someone that suffers from tennis elbow and a bad s...

I was sharing my day out with Freddie who just started fly fishing this spring and is always eager to get on the river. He was set up with spiders and nymphs  and already fishing within minutes of arriving....and as he says its just great to be out on the river.

PRESENTATION: Success in low and clear rivers

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Sunday, May 24, 2015, In : Guiding

This is a story about a real guiding day with a regular client Kelvin.
He had been out with me a good few times and I have to say his fly fishing has improved so much in a year that he is now a very decent fly fisher and able to catch a good few trout & grayling on the rivers. With the river levels being so low and clear and very little hatching during the day I suggested he may wish to re-arrange however all credit to him, he wanted to use this as an opportunity to really develop his skills ...

The Core Components of Fishing Success

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Saturday, October 11, 2014, In : Tuition
A presentation I gave this week to the Members of Halifax Fly Fishers was on this very subject.

So what is success?
What makes you happy?
Do you know what success looks and feels like for you?

Sometimes we anglers are continually in search fro the Holy Grail ...the best fly , the best leader, the best rod and reel and maybe perhaps the answer is already right there in front of you.

OK I know I'm being a bit philosophical but hey why not if it makes me happy?

The presentation also includes some...

So with the weather taking a turn for the better, the dreadful sea fret/fog and easterlies deciding to bugger off for a change.

In the footsteps of Walbran

On 12 March I had the chance to fish the beautiful West Tanfield Club waters on the Ure as part of a grayling brood stock programme. To say I was honoured is an understatement as it's a piece of water that has so much history but is also one ...of those "dead mans shoes" sections of river.
To be able to fish in Walbran's footsteps was an absolute privilege and also to get a few of his beloved grayling was a bonus.

A beauty wild brown trout just over the pound caught by John on the dries on what was a tough day this week.
15 minutes after this picture was taken the water came up brown and muddy...and we definitely weren't on the Mississippi !!
Hopefully this rain will ease soon and we can get back on the rivers.
In the meantime, fly & tackle orders and ventures to lakes and stillwaters are keeping us busy.

Nice one Alex

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Thursday, June 14, 2012, In : Guiding
On Tuesday, Alex & David came to the Durham Fly Fishing Company to learn how to cast and try fly fishing for the first time.
Well it didn't take long before she was casting a decent line roll casting like an expert and then presenting a dry fly on the edge of the ripple.
Well 3 fish on and two landed ......pretty good for a first time with a fly rod.

That smile says it all....

Nice one David...its in the net....

3 crackers for a first timer in North Yorkshire

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Wednesday, May 23, 2012, In : Tuition
Kim is new to fly fishing and booked a day to go somewhere nice, learn how to cast a fly and hoefully catch a trout.
Not a problem I said....so breakfast in Bedale followed by a day on the Lake at West Tanfield on the sunniest day we have had for over 6 weeks.
Kim was really keen, great company and took to it like a duck to water.
A few fish were moving to emerging midge so we opted for dries/emergers ( DFFCo CDC emerger) and not long after had the first of Kims 3 trout coming to the net.

LDO's & March Browns

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Monday, April 2, 2012, In : Fishing
Another day today on the middle Tees and it was tough going. I was about to go home but decided to change locations at 2.00pm......good job too as I just caught the start of the hatch 2.20pm which kept going until 3.30.
5 grayling and 18 trout (up to 1.5lb) in just over an hour !!!....it doesn't get much better than that and made up for my 10.00 am - 2.00pm one fish
In spring time it's all about the hatch, the timing and being in the right place at the right time.
The fish are waiting for the h...

A Silver Medal - 2012 Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championships - Tasmania

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Friday, February 24, 2012, In : Competition
Still suffering some jet lag after getting back home on Wedneday after 3 weeks in Tasmania.
A great result for the England Team gaining a silver commonwealth medal and a bronze individual for JT (John Tyzack).
The fishing was quite tough and in some sectors avoiding the blank was key....especially on Little Pine Lagoon which I drew as my last session !!. 10 minutes left and the line is pulled from my hand as a fish grabs the Kate McClaren on the drop...it's in the net and boy oh boy was I relie...

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Saturday, December 31, 2011, In : Ad hoc
Well I've managed this week to hit the half century  ;-(   or the BIG 50 as they call it.
Also managed a few days out with clients, all of whom have been really nice people. Is it a fact  that most fisherfolk are generally nice people?

May I wish all friends and customers, present and future, a very happy 2012 and hopefully see you on the water sometime.

Rain rain and more rain with wind !!!

Posted by Stuart Wardle on Friday, December 9, 2011, In : Fishing
Well this current weather is certainly not helping the fishing on the rivers with huge floods in the North and Cumbria it will take a week at least to settle down to more fishable conditions.
The opportunity to fish the stillwaters that remain open is certainly the best bet with good reports of  excellent fishing from the local stillwaters.
Lets hope the weather improves and the severely cold conditions of the last couple of years stay away !!!.
